Last night I was feeling kinda poppish. It may have been the fact that Lisa Scott Lee was in Bennets on Saturday night, miming her heart out with some decidely lumpy backing dancers in need of hair pieces as they looked like they'd be dragged through a hedge backward and gang banged and that was before they started dancing.
So Lisa's an ex member of the campest band since Abba - Steps. They were so camp and outrageous that they notched up a shitload of top hits in the late 90s, early naughties. Since then, Lisa's box of hits has emptied quite considerably and now she's hawking round the gay clubs catering to the frenzied queens who'll shake their shammy. The thing is, Lisa's new song 'Electric' is actually rather fab and it's just a shame that she's not appreciated as much.
The foxy little maiden above also came from a cheesy pop band and was part of the brain child of pop Messiah Simon Fuller. Forget Pop Idol, he had S Club 7. They had a kids tv show and churned out hit after hit. Rachel Stevens became a stalwart in the lads mags getting her baps out in cheeky lingerie whenever summoned to do so. S Club 7 split up a few years ago and since then Rachel has produced some rather fabulous pop tracks of her own. Rachel and her managers however have got her into the awful position where her music is smart but unadulterated pop of the highest calibre but Rachel herself has what Madonna would call personality minus. She ticks all the boxes for success but there's nothing behind the facade portrayed to the media and public. The sad thing about Rachel is that her new album "Come and Get It" is a tour de force in pop music. I think the producers were unsure of what sound or direction Rachel was going and thought 'fuck it' and went wildly off kilter and the result is an amazing album. What's also a bit bollocks is that most people won't bother buying the album because it's Rachel Stevens. Songs like 'I Said Never Again' or 'Nothing Good About This Goodbye' and 'Negotiate With Love' should set her on a long and successful career but that all remains to be seen.
The lady above is Miss Kylie Minogue of course and she is the perfect slice of pop. What Rachel lacks in personality, Kylie has in spades when it comes to likeability. Everyone likes Kylie - we grew up with her, we wanted her to get married in Neighbours, we cried when she left in her mini but cheered when she sang Especially For You that played at our school disco, we were shocked at her kinky raunchy image in the early 90s and some fans didn't bother as much during her 'Indie' phase but when she came spinning around again in 2000 she sprinkled glitter and style into pop music again and is now a true icon of popular culture. She's what Rachel Stevens and Lisa Scott Lee want to be and to be honest, if she recorded any of Rachel's album - it would undoubtedly be at the top of the charts - it's that good and so is Kylie.
