New Year and all that was a bit mental. I headed to London on Hogmanay and partied for a few days, took in Wicked (again) but this time with Kerry Ellis in the lead role as Elphaba. She was great and put her own spin on it but I have to say, Idina gets me going every time - she was simply magical! New Year itself was terribly glamourous in London. We had dinner on the Thames in a beautiful restaurant and then off to a club called Kazaam which was a real pop mix. I was staying with my mate Rod and his flatmate and they were really hospitable, especially when I was hammered drunk!! I met lots of their friends who were equally as nice, even if they couldn't understand a word I said with my Scottish accent. The next night I ventured to the back of beyond to see Kylie at Wembley stadium. I again got roaring drunk (do you see a pattern) We were late for the start and missed almost the full first section however, she also sang "Got To Be Certain" accapella, my favourite Kylie song from way back just as she had done almost 2 years ago at her last Showgirl gig. It was an emotional experience to say the least and good to see Miss Kylie back sparkling like a White Diamond!
I was due back yesterday at night so with all the other guys away back to Scotland, I was a brave boy and headed into town myself and took in another show. Cabaret is having a revival and an amazing one at that. The score is so familiar but the storyline sooooo dark - it was astounding. The growth of Nazism in 1930s Berlin spelled an end to the divine decadence of Sally Bowles and those at the KitKat Club. James Dreyfus from tv's Gimme Gimme Gimme was the Emcee, Sheila Hancock as the Frau Schneider and Anna Maxwell Martin didn't look half as odd as she did in Bleak House as the fabulous Sally Bowles. The set design was unique, the choreography unbelievable and the whole design was one to watch. I recommend it to everyone, there was everything you want in a show, sex, nudity, gay kisses, drugs and showtunes.
I really wanted to see Avenue Q and am determined to get tickets either in the UK or New York - wherever I go next!!!!
I love London but don't know how I would be living there especially with all the partying there is to do and shows to see. I don't think my bank balance could take it! Also the tube could seriously do my head in by jumping on and off for different branches and lines first thing in the morning - that's my chance to waken up and get ready for the day without having to think too much about wrong lines and missing stops and the heat in summer would have me sweating like a pregnant nun in confession.
