HER NAME IS BARBARA - NOT BARBRA

There's another Babs I love, other than La Streisand. This one is taller, has bigger hair but just as pure a voice. It's Scotland's very own Barbara Dickson. I don't know what made me hunt for some of her tracks tonight but I got a tad obsessed and found some real gems.

Barbara is a Scottish gal who appeared in a few West End shows, she had her infamous number one hit "I Know Him So Well" with dwarfish diva Miss Elaine Paige from the musical Chess. She then premiered the role of Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers which is still running twenty odd years later.

Barbara Dickson has also played as tough prostitute Anita in the fab 90s drama Band of Gold and her hair was almost as big as it was in the eighties when she was known for towering over Elaine Paige, wearing massive shoulderpads and having a perm just like every woman head in the eighties ie gigantic spirals!!

Like Barbra Streisand, when I listen to Oor Barbara, I don't feel ill at ease that she's not going to hit any of the notes or that she won't give anything less than a perfect performance. Barbara is still touring and will be back in Glasgow in March 09. I may just have to go and see her although some of her stuff has become quite folky whereas I would be happy to hear her belt out showtunes for two hours.

I guess you're too young to remember "January February" but that was a Babs Dickson classic.

Haha, Old Cheeser, I was going to to say the same thing. Her version of 'Another Suitcase' is also pretty special.

Check out Youtube. There is a great version of her singing 'It might be You' from the film Tootsie!

Originally sung by Stephen Bishop.
