Alcazar sadly didn't win Melodifestivalen this year. It's been a bit of an outrage and I'm not happy. On top of that, one of my other favourite singers, Agnes - placed second bottom.
The Swedes may not have a large country but they can churn out their decent pop music Euro style. It's all very camp and outrageous. Between Carola, Charlotte Perrelli last year and Alcazar discoing their tits off - it's great for dancing to.
Agnes, not only does she have a bad first name but she wore gold lurex and had a wind machine in the final. The song was midtempo disco which I loved. I knew I had read about her somewhere else and sure enough, on that other fab blog Don't Stop The Pop, the author is more than just an afficianado of pop music and there was an interview with Aggie - or should I call her Senga? Anyway I downloaded her album Love Dance Pop and sure enough, it's almost as good as Alcazar's. Senga can get a bit monotonous and a few songs run into the next without much difference but on the whole, it's damn good pop.
Other than Senga (who won Swedish Idol in 2006 I think) there was another band who placed 3rd in Melodifestivalen. Some scary operatic bird got a very undeserved 1st place and will represent Sweden in 2009's Eurovision Song Contest. The band is made up of boys who used to be in Swedish Idol shows and they are called EMD. They are all terribly sexy and did a whole 'Sam Sparro let's disco and wear suits with top hats' routine that looked a bit messy. The good thing was that they were all rather hot and the song is just camp. I love the way the Swedish really highlight some of their consonants - it sounds more English than most British people sound!
Nothing will be any camper than Alcazar doing Stay The Night wearing Neon and botoxed out their brains. The song has elements of Amii Stewart's Knock on Wood and they sang their hearts out - my favourite midtempo song just now is "Put The Top Down" it lets the girls take centre stage for at least 2 lines of the song and they belt out like nobody's business.
