Yes Mama Cass, the big fat bitch from The Mamas and The Papas has returned from the grave to play daily in my flat at full volume at 8am. Well actually it's me putting on a CD of the 'Beautiful Thing' soundtrack that is crammed with Mama solo stuff and group work with The Mamas and the Papas.
Her music is cheery, bright and in her own words, groovy and true. I discovered Mama with an ex who made me watch 'Beautiful Thing' the one thing about him I have fond memories of! He explained that 'Make Your Own Kind Of Music' is a song relating to gays cos they too sing their own special song - apparantly. So to beat those Winter blues in the morning I've had Mama on full pelt. My own singing leaves a lot to be desired but it's all just soooo catchy and kitsch!
Mama Cass broke away from The Mamas and the Papas to forge her own career in the early 70s and had some of her own hits aswell. The band were a real hippie group who were part of the Summer of 69 and their name became attached with the idea of free love and peace and their records still hold up - an awful hi nrg version of 'California Dreamin' is played in the Polo with alarming regularity.
Cass may also be known to have one of the strangest deaths ever - she was in London on tour and died actually of a heart attack due to her obesity but it's alleged that the greedy bissum choked whilst eating a ham sandwich - if this is true then she must have been a real pie muncher! But I fucking love her - and her music so wherever she is now I guess she's making her own kind of music and singing her own special song!!! You go sister soldier!!
