A YOUNG MAN'S PASSAGE
On the way back from London I bought the book 'A Young Man's Passage' by British homo comic Julian Clary. This was at the pressing of Trashaddict who thought it might be up my alley. I devoured this book in one day as I read the majority in the airport and the rest at home on Monday. It was an absolute revelation and some paragraphs were like reading my own life story.
Julian had a happy home life and there was no question he was gay. His attitude and some of the things he spoke about were uncanny. It was both hilarious and heart wrenching especially when he talks about the death of his lover from AIDS, his unwavering love for him was touching and the way he just picked himself up to become the glamorous person he was supposed to be. The list of guys he had slept with is also similar to my own list of conquests. The names don't matter but they have descriptions like Mr Big Cock and Italian Guy and Slack Ass guy and 4 Fingers Terry. This book is a must read and truly amazing. A total revelation and interesting. Julian pulls no punches being honest about himself and the situations he's been in.
Julian became infamous in the UK in 1993 when at the British Comedy Awards he made a valium filled comment about the Chancellor Norman Lamont who was in attendance and the mention of fisting was involved. This almost ruined his career but he's enjoyed a renaissance of sorts after appearing Strictly Come Dancing last year. My own mother surprised me by not voting for the girl from Eastenders but Julian every week. She loved his wit when being criticsed by the judges. He told Fan of the Tan, Craig Revel Horwood that he wouldn't know a Paso Doble if he sat on it and that he was nothing but a 'silly old queen'
Thumbs and fists up for Julian!
