AND NOW THEY WORK FOR ME
They had big hair, tight jeans and knew how to do a mean bit of kung-fu and they broke all the rules. His name was Charlie Townsend and he had 3 women working for his private investigation company - his angels.
SABRINA DUNCAN - The bookish one. She didn't have big hair and was played by Kate Jackson. Sabrina was always undercover as the reporter or government official and had an odd fascination with turtlenecks. Sabrina came close once to having a lovelife but that was quickly diminished for the sisterhood of being an Angel.
KELLY GARRETT - The grown-up sexy one. She had cheekbones you could cut glass with ala Jaclyn Smith. She got the model role or photographer and was always the one who got hurt. If ever an Angel was in peril, it was always Kelly, getting a stray bullet or almost getting run over. She lasted every season and became the stalwart of the show.
JILL MUNROE - Blonde Bombshell. Pinup of the seventies Farrah Fawcett don't forget the Majors played Jill. She had the more physical role being the rollerskater, disco dancer, skateboarder and evangelist's niece. Jill always managed to wear spaghetti strap vests without a bra - sending male temperatures rising although that famous hair flick never wilted. Farrah Fawcett-Majors left after season one although returned for a few episodes for the next 3 seasons.
These were the original Angels, Jill's sister Kris Munroe turned up to take her place played by Cheryl Ladd. Then Tiffany Welles became an Angel taking Sabrina's place and in the final season Tanya Roberts was ginger Julie Rogers who ended up hanging on to the roof of a car being very dramatic! Charlie's Angels was amazingly camp and the situations the girls got into defied belief - if anyone's seen Angels in Chains they can testify to that. The Angels infiltrate a prison and end up as hookers at the pleasure of the governor before being chained up and escaping the clutches of a nasty lesbian warder who had unfortunate dress sense and haircut - something that was almost as criminal to the Angels as murder.
Charlie was never seen by the Angels but managed to go on a speaker phone to give them each an assignment - he was voiced by John Forsythe of Dynasty fame and was only ever seen from behind, normally with some playboy bunny hanging on to him rather provocatively. Because of the hair flicking and flares and fiesty action from the Angels this has made it a real favourite of mine, to be honest, their investigations normally meant filing through a few cabinets and trying to get close to other people involved in the caper and when the bad guy or rough European lesbian were confronted, they kicked their flares up and mastered a few karate chops and won the day! One of the highlights of the show was the opening credits. There was a big explosion as John Forsythe announced......
'Once upon a time , there wee three girls who went to the police academy, and they were each assigned very hazardous duties, but I took them away from all that - and now they work for me - my name is Charlie!!
