UGLY BETTY

Simply the best TV show since Desperate Housewives. Ugly Betty concerns Hispanola Betty Suarez who wants to further her career in publishing and comes from Queens in New York. She's of average weight, doesn't wear makeup, wears blue braces on her teeth and dress sense from a Mama's and Papa's video.

Betty wants to get the job as assistant to editor in chief of Mode magazine. A slimly disguised version of Vogue. Betty is the social outcast. As a gay man who's had abuse from other people and feels they don't fit in at time - I can relate. Betty is laughed at from the start, she tells a heartbreaking story as she doesn't fit in about the time she stayed in on her prom night with her mum and dad and it tugged at my heartstrings and I did shed a tear.

Vanessa Williams is the bitchy creative director of Mode and has her bitchier gay assistant who hurls abuse at Betty whenever he gets the chance. The supporting cast is brilliant and the show is getting better and better with each episode and the story of Betty's family draws out and Betty's own journey to remain true to herself and yet progress is exciting to watch. I love America Ferraro who plays Betty - she's totally adorable and a superb actress. Her reactions to the people around her resonate with past experiences in my life and it makes for brilliant tv.

On top of that, Betty's father is hooked on the telenovela "Vidas Del Fuego" which is soooooo soapy and fabulous, Salma Hayek produces the show and also has a recurring role as Sofia, a rival editor to the hunky spunky Daniel Meade who is Betty's boss.

A little bit of mystery, comedy, romance and heart breaking make Ugly Betty this years must see TV. And Alan Dale (Jim Robinson from Neighbours) is also in it! And watch out for the Dreamgirls sequence where the bithcy assistants do their own version of the musical!
