DISCOTASTIC

Here's a rundown of a few great but slightly obscurish disco tracks that are must have's on any playlist.

God created Disco and thank the Lord for that! In no particular order....

LINDA CLIFFORD - RED LIGHT - Featured on the Fame Soundtrack, it seems oddly out of place with legwarmers in the movie but it stands alone as a great disco track. Linda's vocals are superb and it makes me want to grow a moustache and wear a tight vest and stand outside a 70s men's club looking shifty but cutting a rug on the dancefloor. I think it should have been included in the Tales Of The City soundtrack - it's fierce.

BETTE MIDLER - BIG NOISE FROM WINNETKA - Bette ventured from torch into disco with her Thighs and Whispers album. This was a headline track and it's easy to see why, she grabs disco with both hands and goes all brassy all with a high energy beat, a female vocalist at the top of her disco game.

BRAINSTORM - LOVIN IS REALLY MY GAME - This song is definitely best heard before a night out or on a night out. It's frantic pace from the start doesn't let up for a second as we're swept away. One song that no matter how tired you feel, it gets you moving, like me this evening when I was dusting!

ALFIE DAVISON - LOVE IS A SERIOUS BUSINESS - I heard this track last week whilst watching the crazy "Wedding Belles" from Irvine Welsh and I was furious with myself that I hadn't heard this semi mid tempo disco stomper. I thought I knew almost all the hidden gems to find but this one eluded me. It's a bit Northern Soul and a lot disco. The male vocals are pretty strong and I can see my everyone's mother dancing at their local pub to this. A real hidden gem.

DONNA SUMMER - DIM ALL THE LIGHTS - No entry about disco could be complete without Donna Summer making an appearance. This song was originally written for Rod Stewart but Donna kept it and took it high in the charts. It starts off slow (like a lot of Donna) before kicking into a familiarish sound. An uber strong bassline and excellent backing vocals, the females on this really finish the song for me with their extended long notes. All I need is a bottle of poppers and it's disco heaven.

THE SUPREMES - LET YOURSELF GO - Picking up the pace from Donna. The Supremes had a few disco albums in the 70s, both "High Energy" and their final album "Mary, Scherrie and Susaye" had some great disco. Let Yourself Go is one of their finest moments, Scherrie Payne especially shows off her lungs and the pace is similar to Brainstorm. I defy you to not get swept up by a glitterball with this one.

LIQUID GOLD - SUBSTITUTE - They had another hit with "Dance Yourself Dizzy" but I actually prefer this lesser known track. It reminds me of going to work in the summer when the sun's out and it can set you up for the day and put that extra spring in your step.

So, treat yourself and let me know if you listen to any of them and enjoy them. I know I do!

I was but an ovum for most of the 1970s, so these tracks are unfamiliar...

...but I intend to look them up...
