BEEHIVES AND PIGGIES

I'm a tired little kitty tonight and realised all my posts recently have been all text and no piccies and we all know that piccies are an easy way of fleshing out a post and brightening up a blog and also other people's days when they read and go "I totally remember those shoulderpads!"

The pic above isn't so much shoulder pads as just shoulders - from Miss Joan Crawford. Most people think that Joan and Bette starred in one movie together. Righty??? Well wrongy actually. They filmed parts of the followup "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" where they played rival cousins. Joan was nasty Miriam who was trying her best to drive Charlotte (Bette) stark staring bonkers. Behind the scenes however was a whole different ball game with Bette pulling the strings and driving Joan off the set and to the nearest hospital to recuperate. Joan was replaced by Bette's best gal pal, the whimsical Olivia De Havilland who perfected the role of the sweet bitch.

A classic movie and a classic scene photgraphed. Apparently it took the crew hours to finally get the two together for the photoshoot and afterward the cameraman cursed as he didn't get any in colour. The pics were scheduled to appear in Life magaizne but after Joan left the film, they were dropped. Thankfully, Joan's beehive wig and Bette's quite vile pigtails live on in celluloid.

Great pic. I remember reading all about the backstage shenanigans between Bette and Joan whilst they were making "Hush Hush". I kind of felt sorry for Joan and don't blame her for walking off the set as she did (although she doesn't exactly qualify as an angel herself).

Personally I thought "Baby Jane" was a better pic than "Hush Hush" -I just liked the story better and the rivalry between Bette and Joan was of course the centrepiece...Maybe I should watch "Hush" again though, time for a re-appraisal...haven't seen it in years...
