A WOMAN'S PLACE
I just watched a drama which was light Sunday fayre but rather good. Sarah Parrish who I love from Cutting It, played an investment banker in the city who is extremely successful and treated as one of the lads. She goes off to have a baby and comes back but in a different position etc etc. She then sues the bank and is caused much distress as everyone she worked with closes ranks. The best job was from the wonderful Sarah Lancashire. I never really bothered with her as Raquel all those years ago in Corrie but she did a star turn tonight and I only wish there was more of that than of Sarah Parrish's frankly boring family life. It raised a few questions about women coming back to work after giving birth and the implications that has. I'm a bit undecided about it all dependant on the role the person is in. Everyone's circumstances change throughout their career but it pisses me off that mother's seem to think they can get priority at holidays to spend with their family. That I completely disagree with as I have a family aswell and no one should be given special dispensation just because they have a family but then I could start on the government and tax credits for having children. As Tallulah Bankhead once said - "I'm not childless dahling! I'm child free!" Her last words were also "Codeine, Bourbon" so who knows if that's worth anything! But nonetheless, a rather good one off drama that wasn't too taxing but I'd love to see the sharp Sarah Lancashire again in a similar role. That's her place!

I only caught the end of it but it looked good. Sarah Parrish is a great actress, she was very good in a drama she did with David Tennant some months back in which she plays the wife of a guy who is brain damaged in a car accident. She's a very "real", believable performer. And then of course she was also with Mr Tennant Xmas in the Dr Who Xmas special last year, looking completely unrecognisable as a spider-monster-woman! A versatile lady!
I don't have any problem with mothers getting a long period off to have kids - it's necessary really. Although by comparison the amount of time fathers get for paternity leave is pretty insulting.
