What is it about musicals that get the gayers going? I've been captivated watched the show Musicality. Where amateurs compete for a starring role in the West End hit Chicago for 1 night only. I've seen my share of musicals in my time and love them. It must be some kind of chemical reaction to seeing some people on stage who feel the need to burst into song at any given moment and belt out as if their lives depended on it and overact the song both vocally and visually.
Since Musicality started I've been listening to the Barnum soundtrack with Glenn Close and the Patti LuPone version of Sunset Boulevard! Accept NO substitutes! All I know is I appreciate a good voice and some fab dancing and musicals have tonnes of this. Being a discipline of the arts, there's also a fair chance that some of the cast bat for my team aswell which is always a plus!
Now I can't sing a note but maybe it's because even I'm too gay to function sometimes but when I hear Barbra singing 'Don't Rain On My Parade' or Bernadette Peter's live version of 'Broadway Baby' I involuntary start singing with as much passion as Barbra/Judy/Elaine/Bernadette. My only worry is that I'll sound as vile as Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly) playing Mama Rose in 'Gypsy' I probably do but who gives a fuck? Musicals are fabulous and camp - just like moi!
