I've deliberately not spoken much about Desperate Housewives for well over a year-ish on this blog. Season 2 was hit and miss after the stellar performances in Season 1. What a silly waste they made of Felicia Tillman in Season 2 and as for Alfre Woodard, there was one episode that made me all excited and that was the one when she was invited to the poker games and challenged Bree. The season 2 finale brought me back to the Housewives I know and love and now 7 episodes into Season 3 I'm as hooked as ever.
The premise of Desperate Housewives has always been the stories of the wives, Lynette, Bree, Susan, Gabrielle and occasionally Edie interweaving although having their own arc. Tonight I watched another housewife, Carolyn Bigsby played expertly in her pearls and twin set by Laurie Metcalfe (Jackie from Roseanne) had gone mental mental chicken oriental at the local supermarket as Bree told her that her husband had been having an affair so she went to confront him and ended up holding the shop hostage.
Meanwhile, Bree Van De Hodge as she kind of is now watches the events unfold on her lovely widescreen and has all the neighbours round to revel in the drama - she greets them at the door with hors d'ouerves "Devilled eggs anyone?"
Unbeknownst to Bree, Lynette, Edie, Nora, Julie and Austin are all entrapped and the drama unfolds brilliantly. Words are exchanged, shots are fired, people are killed and all in all - Desperate Housewives produces one of the best episodes since Martha Huber was murdered and hit over the head with the blender she stole from Mary Alice Young.
Desperate Housewives has that unique ability to move quickly between comedy and drama in the space of seconds and the humour is quite dark that appeals to my sense of humour although I'd never kill someone in a supermarket - but if they wore pop socks and looked like a hooker - they probably deserved it! If you haven't seen it - watch it and you'll get what I mean!
